Leading international certification organizations for sustainable food production enable businesses to buy and sell certified products
Friend of the Earth and Friend of the Sea, the world’s leading sustainability certification programs for food production, have launched an online Sustainable Marketplace and accompanying mobile app. These digital markets enable businesses with Friend of the Earth and Friend of the Sea certifications to buy and sell certified products on a worldwide basis. Friend of the Earth and Friend of the Sea are part of the World Sustainability Organization, an industry-independent NGO.
“Sustainability will only work if it facilitates business success,” explains Bray, Director of the World Sustainability Organization. “This marketplace is intended to reward companies that make the commitment to sustainable practices. As consumers increasingly express a preference for environmentally conscious brands, this marketplace can help serve demand and stimulate mutual success amongst our member companies.”
The marketplace is free to join. Over 1,000 customers and suppliers that are part of the Friend of the Earth and Friend of the Sea certification programs are eligible to participate. They can post products for sale along with requests to buy. The bidder and requester are anonymous at the initial stage of the transaction. For example, a Friend of the Sea-certified seafood producer might offer 20 tons of Atlantic Mackerel for sale and accept bids for this sale. Or, a company might request a certain monthly tonnage of Friend of the Earth-certified tomato sauce or Italian wine and consider offers it receives on the marketplace.
Accompanying the web-based marketplaces is the free “Sustainable Marketplace” mobile app. The app offers identical functionality to the online marketplace and it is available on both Android and iOS stores. The online site is reachable from the Friend of the Sea and Friend of the Earth home pages.
